Sunrise star Monique Wright has shared her family’s struggle to find a home to rent in Sydney amid Australia’s ongoing rental crisis.

The Weekend Sunrise co-host - who was filling in on Thursday for Edwina Bartholomew - says she has looked at 30 rental properties recently and still cannot find a place to live.

“We’ve recently been looking, and we’ve looked at 30 properties,” Wright told co-hosts David “Kochie” Koch and Natalie Barr.

“It is appalling. It is so appalling.

“You see it. People are desperate. We’ve been desperate.”

“At every price point, exactly,” Natalie said.

“Amazing,” Kochie added.

The admission followed a Sunrise segment on the rental market across Australia - after the vacancy rate in Australia’s two largest cities, Sydney and Melbourne, dropped to one per cent in January.

This is a new low for both cities.

Of the top 10 average annual rent rises for tenants in the past year, nine were in units in areas across Sydney — with the highest house price increase in Canterbury, according to CoreLogic.

Botany units have increased 25 per cent, up an average of $151 per week, in the past year.

Sydney Inner-City units have increased 24 per cent, up an average of $166 per week, in the past year.

Kogarah and Rockdale units have increased 23 per cent, up an average of $111 per week.

Strathfield, Burwood and Ashfield units have increased 21 per cent, up an average of $101 per week.

Hurstville units have increased 21 per cent, up an average of $96 per week.

Marrickville, Sydenham and Petersham units have increased 20 per cent, up an average of $100 per week.

Eastern Suburbs (south) units have increased 20 per cent, up an average of $130 per week.

Auburn units have increased 19 per cent, up an average of $96 per week.

Canterbury units have increased 18 per cent, up an average of $71 per week.

Canterbury houses have increased 18 per cent, up an average of $115 per week.
